The Larry Johnson TD was a bad call.

At the moment Johnson's foot hit the pylon (out of bounds), the ball should have been marked where it was at ... which to me was about six inches short of the goal line.

The pylon is considered in bounds. So the call on LJ was correct.

To the OP: The ball never crossed the goalline (or the goalline extended). Thus, no TD.

You're right (I don't understand it, but it's right there in the rules ... pylon considered inbounds) ... however, if any other part of Johnson's foot touched out of bounds, the ball still should have been spotted about six inches before the goal line. Maybe no other part of his foot did touch. I can't say for sure.

Apologies for the misinterpretation.

No, not anymore, at least as far as the pylon is concerned. This rule was changed a couple years ago yet very few people seemed to notice, including many coaches.

I believe the way the new rule is worded is as long as any part of your body touches the pylon before your body touches out of bounds, then it is a TD.

Vick did this a couple weeks ago. He rolled left and dove with the ball in his left hand. His right hand smacked the pylon. He was called out of bounds at the 1/2 yardline, the call was challenged, and overturned to a TD.

The ball still has to cross the goal line, but the goal line extends out of bounds.

Yes it did. It was a very odd play, but his foot stepped right on the pylon, which is considered in bounds. The ball then crossed the goaline extended (out of bounds), which is still a TD according to the Vick-interpretation that somebody mentioned earlier.
