Patriotism is defined as love of country....
Many Americans questioned John Kerry's 'love of country' (patriotism) by his actions AFTER the Vietnam war....

As for the purple hearts, many of his 'band of brothers' were highly critical about whether he deserved some of his purple hearts.... It takes a special talent, to alienate so many people in just four months of combat....

No one questions the swift boat vet credentials...... And no questions Bush43's love of country...

I try to listen to a lot of talk radio. Local conservative talk (am1500.com), Limbaugh, Hannity, and some of the stuff on Air America. All in all it's fairly entertaining. You should give it a try.

You're getting closer...some assume that a swifty is patriot because of his service and purple heart. The same assumption isn't made of a liberal who went on to serve his country in other capacities for much of his life.

Not only that there is zero irony involved. Perhaps a definition might be in order

Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs

Still works for me. What definition did you want to use?

I do believe that for something to be ironic (using the archaic rarely used definition which you chose) it must be intrinsically ironic and not dependent on the perspective of the observer. Your example fails this test.

It isn't that great an irony though. Not incredibly funny, IMHO. Still, the point stands.
