“Knocking off two regimes allows us to do extraordinary things”

No doubt.

Rummy's idea of manhunting the Baathist insurgency leaders should have been implemented long ago (actually, I had been wondering for quite some time why we weren't aggressively doing that already). However, better late than never. GOGOGOGOGO!

What's with the layout - The New Yorker - then FACT in bold red beneath? Who concocted that IDEA - Alexander Woollcott?

I always did assume "The New Yorker" had a monopoly on FACT, but was unaware of the boldness with which it is toted - not that I'm surprise. Seymour Hersch should be fired and Robert Benchely hired to replace him. I know that Benchley is dead, but this only adds to his appeal and he could produce more enjoyable articles from one of the circles of Hell that he no doubt currently inhabits.

And what’s with this Vietnam word that is always an appendage to many current articles to inflame the throbbing masses with? I’m bored of this. Can’t these higher ups and mucky muck writers think of anything else for a teaser?

Thanks for posting the link, interesting read.

An American who has advised the civilian authority in Baghdad said, “The only way we can win is to go unconventional. We’re going to have to play their game. Guerrilla versus guerrilla. Terrorism versus terrorism. We’ve got to scare the Iraqis into submission.”
'

so much for that liberation thing a la rome 1944, although to be fair the US was involved in post ww2 italian terrorism in the name of anti-communism.

But many of the officials I spoke to were skeptical of the Administration’s plans. Many of them fear that the proposed operation—called “preëmptive manhunting” by one Pentagon adviser—has the potential to turn into another Phoenix Program.

i expect any day to see on tv how wonderful phoenix program was in vietnam. (not that i watch tv)
