U.S. Deserters go where?
what country is (was?) more accepting of deserting U.S. soldiers? Do they all have policies that say "whatever, come on in" or what? I thought I read something a while ago on Canada accepting a few deserters from the U.S. recently, (of course in Vietnam as well) but i dont feel like looking it up. it kinda stuck in my head though. (Not a thread about the morality of desertion)

I am no expert at the law.
Deserters flee to Canada cause their laws protect people from the death penalty. Deserting is punishable by death(U.S.A UCMJ) only during wartime. So, if you were american gi you could not desert in peace time to Canada and be "safe".

usually what happens is a deserter(coward) goes to Canada and applies for asylum. The Canadians will not simply let ANYONE through. So the deserter goes through the process and usually loses. I would think the U.S. would likely do the same if one of its allies soldiers tried to desert and come to the U.S.
