Default In which sport do coaches matter the most?

So which is it?

I think it is football but maybe someone can prove me wrong. No poll, this thread is only for reasoned discussion with supporting points.

I tend to agree with football. However, if the Detroit Pistons fall off this year, I'll say NBA basketball.

If you are talking in a general sense, I will say 100% football simply because you have more players on offense and defense and special teams and there are so many more schemes and ways to counter them as well.

Football. The coaches call almost all the plays and there is more opportunity to overcome talent disadvantages and exploit talent gaps with skillful playcalling. Of course, the authors of the Hidden Game of Football say that the EV of good play calling is marginal and that the real importance of football coaches lies in on the practice field.

It depends on what you mean by "matter". If you are talking during a game, I would say football too. But in baseball - I assume you would mean manger there - his effect is more strategic on who to put in the rotation, who to call up from the minors, etc. It's more subtle, but can have the same effct.

Coaches matter most in the sports with the most parity. The value of coaching in the NFL has gone up significantly in the last decade. It's by far the sport where it matters most.
