Default Official Indie Starter Kit Thread (Calling all hipsters... sorry euro)

2p2er nomadtla asked me for some advice on getting into 'indie' music. I asked him if he liked the idea of me zipping together 10-12 albums and then sending them to him. He said he thought this was a good idea. So, I ask you, OOT, to help me put this compilation together.

He has told me he is more into the songwriterish stuff than the unique sounds stuff. Though he is open to anything.

Given that Im unwilling to put forth the effort to do this if ITAOTS, YHF or the soft bulletin arent included, and Im sure one of Bends/OK Comp have to be included, we are left with 8 albums.

Go nuts.

How about Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights maybe?

Great album and it's a pretty accessible. I could be wrong...

1. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
2. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
3. Radiohead - OK Computer
4. Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
5. Built to Spill - Keep it like a Secret
6. Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
7. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
8. Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
9. Decemberists - Castaways and Cutouts
10. Spoon - Kill The Moonlight
11. Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
12. Ted Leo - Hearts of Oak

Yikes. This leaves out R.E.M., Fiery Furnaces, Trail of Dead, Cursive, Bright Eyes, Beck, At the Drive-In, Sufjan, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The New Pornographers, and My Bloody Valentine among others.

Take out Decemberists (dude's voice is *too* damn indie rock) and put in Iron and Wine's "The Creek Drank the Cradle"

Sufjan's "Illinois" HAS to be in there, IMO.

Shins "Oh, Inverted World!" and some Beck would be good too.

7. Pixies - Surfer Rosa

Do you think SR is > DL for someone who has never heard them before??

I think he is more likely to like DL.

(DL was on my preliminary list)

Either one is fine. I started with Surfer Rosa and loved it, but Doolittle is cool. SR has the advantage of having the most famous Pixies song ("Where is My Mind")
