Default Major computer problem

This isn't for my computer, so I might not have all the specifics. Basically a friends computer crashes all the time. It will get the blue screen of death and just turn off. Then it won't turn on again for hours, but will eventually work again. This friend already reformatted their hard drive and started from scratch, but the problem persists. I'm guessing it's some major hardware issue that can't be fixed but just looking for opinions. Thanks.

Bad power supply.
Bad Ram.

These are the usual suspects for a total shutdown type problem.

Overheating - it won't turn on again for hours. Check fans all working - they won't be... replace the dud(s).

Bad ram wont make the computer not start within a couple of hours. It is more likley that it is heat cousing the problem, but the computer often restarts after a few minutes if that was the case. I would start with cleaning all fans an see that they work and then try another powersupply.
