There are better ways to decide a game than penalties (i.e. ways that actually resemble soccer). Also in a championship game, I don't see why you can't play until someone scores. It will happen eventually. They do it in playoff hockey.

Jim McMahon throws a TD, two-point conversion fails, 45-31.

BYU recovers the onsides kick, McMahon completes 2-2 passes and they run it in from the 1.

Two-point conversion (pass) successful, 45-39. 1:58 remaining.

onsides kick by BYU is recovered by SMU, but the defense holds, and the Mustangs are forced to punt. The kick is blocked, BYU recovers. :41 left on their 41.

McMahon throws two incomplete passes. On the last play of the game McMahon throws a hail mary from his own 45. It is caught by Clay Brown, a BYU receiver.

Tie game, 45-45, no time remaining. Kurt Gunther kicks the PAT, and BYU wins, 46-45, scoring 21 points in the final three minutes.
