Default Hand against maniac gone bad

First time poster on this board, so be gentle. Well, actually, don't be.

Ladbrokes 2.50/5 6-max (6 handed), 500 max buy-in.

CO in this hand is solid. If there's anything to say about him, it would be that he is perhaps a bit tight and a bit passive for his own good. Button in this hand is the full-fledged maniac. Bluffs whenever given the opportunity and likes to do it with massive overbets. If played back at, he will only release his hand if it is painfully obvious he is beaten. I've folded a couple of hands to his bets, when I had been the preflop aggressor earlier. Not sure he notices, though.

All fold to me in CO-1 with 4 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] and I raise to $20. I have about $1000 behind me. CO (~$600) calls, button calls (~1200) and both blinds fold. Flop comes

4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]5 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] ($65)

I check, CO checks and button bets $80. I call and CO folds. Turn comes

9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] ($225)

I check, button bets $300. I call with the intention of pushing on the river. River is

9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] ($825)

Now what? And how'd I do so far?

bet the flop, they will never see it coming.

then when the turn comes, bet again like you are being stubborn w/ an overpair.

if the LAG raises you, dump it in.

I was 90% sure the LAG would bet this flop if I checked it to him. He wouldn't miss an opportunity to bluff me off my supposedly missed overcards. There was a chance, though, that he would dump a really crappy hand if I came out betting. Still bet the flop?

I suck at NL holdem, so when I ask this I am serious not mocking: why in hands like this do so many people seem to want to just call the turn and push the river? Why not just checkraise the turn?

yeah how are you not check-raising turn at least? what were you going to do on river c/r there or come out betting? the way you played it you gotta checkraise the turn, either way is a real crappy river card to hit.

you dont lead out with overcards after you raise?

anyway, even if he may fold some whiffed hands on the flop, you still need to bet it. hope to build a pot and maybe stack him off.

i still would rather bet 1/2- 2/3 pot on the turn and look timid than CR, as villian may really try to push him off representing a nine.

or he may have one, and you are happy.

Always, and I'm sure CO smelled danger when I checked. Button wouldn't, though. He took every check as a sign of weakness, no matter how suspicous it was. He was that horrible.

Given how button played this hand, he could hold just about anything and I was really hoping he would hit something on the river (be it just a small pair), because he was very likely to pay me off if he did if I pushed on the river. Horrible?
