Default Hold Em Poker Book

I have read Winning Low Limit Hold Em and Hold Em Excellence and am now looking to get Theory of Poker and Hold Em Poker For Advanced Players.

My question is this. Do I need to get and read Hold Em Poker by Sklansky before reading the Advanced book or just stick with Theory and Advanced?

Thanks.

You should read the original Holdem book by Sklansky because it outlines how he developed his starting hand requirements.

Understanding the relationships of the cards to each other is extremely important in holdem, as often it is the kicker that decides the pot.

It really depends on what you are trying to do.

I find the best combination is to read and study for a few days, then go play for a week or so, making notes, and then go back to the books.

Some of these books you should read and re-read.

When I first started I got HPFAP and read it multiple times without reading anything else. Got right into winning play off the bat, although sometimes I'd flop top pair and suddenly not know what to do. HPFAP assumes you already know what to do in these typical situations. Going back to HEP later filled in some of the gaps in my understanding.

What am I saying? Basically, read everything and eventually it will all gel, I wouldn't worry about the order of reading.

Thanks for the replys. I have decided to go with Hold Em Poker and Theory of Poker. I will read and digest those for awhile and then pick up a copy of Hold Em for Advanced Players after that.

If it's not too late to change your order, I'd consider skipping HEP, unless you're a completist. If you've got WLLHE and TOP, HEPFAP isn't much of a jump at all and, between the three, they cover the concepts introduced in HEP. My first poker book was TOP and, after that, HEP really didn't do much for me.

HEPFAP is a must-read though. It won't do a lot for your average low-limit online game, but it's done wonders for my micro-limit home game where, for some reason, most of my opponents are actually decent players.

From what I've seen there's little agreement on that and I've yet to see a glowing recommendation for any tourney book. The tourney forums here are pretty damn useful, though.

You can't miss with it. It's a solid and yet fairly easy read. Only about 108 pages (I think) so you can have it done in a day. It can also be picked up for less than $20. So, I say why not?

Tournament Poker for Advanced Players is a great tourney book... focuses on limit tourneys mainly though =(. Some new 2+2 books are in the works though... look for them.
