Default Re: Duke & Hellmuth chop Tournament of Champions prize money???

I highly doubt there was a deal struck when the Superstars got down to heads up. That kind of deal would have disrupted the pre tournament deal 6 or 7 seven of them probably made before the event got under way. Let's see, Doyle, Howard, Annie, Chip, and Johnny, anyone want to lay odds those 5 weren't doing business? T.J., Hmmm, someone that routinely needs to borrow I am sure stuck to his no deal guns. I think Hellmuth was probably a dealer as well, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to get heads up. Lets see, that leaves two, didn't it seem like Raymer and Daniel took some ridiculous gamble in vain attempts to double up in the "winner take all" format? Daniel has a no deals policy and he has insulted Annie in a public forum, accused Doyle and Chip of being cheats in a drunken e-mail. I would think that might get him barred from the trough. And Raymer is a rank outsider in this company.

I think A,D,H,J,P,C, worked out the formalities, threw T.J. a bone out of compassion, and cut out Raymer and Danny. The only two players coincidentally, who really looked likle they were playing winner take all.

Annie probably got a few hundred K more for winning the whole enchilada.

Oh, and ESPN had to ask Phil to whine and pout. Yeah it was fake, but because he didn't really care seeing that he was scoring anyway. Believe me, if it was a 2M freezeout, ESPN wouldn't have had to coax.

The whole thing was a sick joke. Only television network sleazebags make high stakes poker seem seedier than it actually is.

Yeah that settles it all. I hope you never, ever serve on a jury.

Read Daniel N's new cardplayer article. A quote from it:

[ QUOTE ]
On the break, I was feeling pretty good about making a comeback, and my focus was intensifying. I was chatting with Phil Hellmuth, and he said, “No offense, Daniel, but I have to root against you tonight.”

“Fair enough, Phil, but why is that?”

“Well, because as soon as you get knocked out, we can make a deal.”

Phil knows my policy on dealmaking, and even in an event in which it is $2 million for first and nothing for second, I wasn’t about to compromise my position on dealmaking. I genuinely believe we need to eliminate deals from tournament poker, and more importantly, from televised events.

[/ QUOTE ]

As you can see from this, there clearly was a deal.

Wow!!! If some of you play poker like how you're playing the guessing game, you must lose a lot of hands.

It is common knowledge that most high-limit pros confide possible prize-jeopardizing information to dealers at any casino they play in, who, in turn, disseminate said information to random people they deal cards to.

The taxation on a deal is an interesting phenomenon.

Example: at a local tourney, if you make a deal and split $1,000 or $2,000, it's not problematic with the IRS as, especially at Foxwoods, they don't record data on these smaller payouts.

However, on 2 Million, there is a record.

Now, Annie Duke "wins" 2,000,000 -- she will have to account for this on her taxes. There is NO way around it.

Now, let's say there was a deal and she hands 1,000,000 to Phil -- sure, bank transfers and the like but ... this is big money and has to be accounted for.

The taxes will need to get paid and I'm curious as to how they get around that situation IF they split since Annie will otherwise have to pay taxes on the full 2million.

I'm not an accountant but it poses an interesting problem when you're talking about this kind of loot.

Default I am an accountant...

and i don't know.

I know that there is an IRS form to report winnings paid to backers. I have never actually looked at the form, but maybe it could be used here also. But I am too lazy to do the research. Maybe someone else will.

Seems like it shouldn't be too hard to use that form and fill it out like Phil had backed Annie for 50%, and retroactively date it.

No offense, but I can't imagine that the solution involves creating false documentation....
