Default basic odds question..

i was counting my outs for my flush draw on the flop to hit on the turn.

i've seen 5 cards (3 on the flop and my 2)

that leaves 47 unseen cards

i have 9 outs to hit my flush draw

47 divided by 9 = 5.2.

So i would need better pot odds than 5.2 to 1 to call profitably. I realize almost never fold the nut flush draw or a strong one, i'm just using this as an example for my question.

with that said and i'm assuming my math is correct. I was surfing the micro-limit FAQ's and found a pot odd chart. Well according to the pot odd chart, it says i need 4.1 to 1 for the call to be profitable.

Now my question(s) i think what the pot odds chart is saying is its 4.1 to 1 to hit your flush draw by the river. Could someone show me the formula to calculate 'by the river'?

and also, which odd is correct? 5.2 or 4.1 to call profitably?

Thanks for your time.

You forgot to subtract 1 from 5.2.

You'll win this once in 5.2 times, which means you're going to win it once for every 4.2 times you lose. So you're getting 4.2 to 1.

Your math is a little off. It's not 47/9 to calculate odds, it's 38/9 to go from flop to turn. (38 cards not helping versus 9 cards helping.) To clarify, a 25% chance is 3:1, not 4:1 against. (75:25, not 100:25)

[i]Edit: DC's method is accurate, and gets to the same result.

oh ok, that makes sense. Why does the pot odds chart subtract another .1 tho? its 4.1 to 1 not 4.2 to 1 on this chart.

4.1 is the odds from turn to river, not flop to turn.

Meh, it's only .1. If I got good enough to make decisions based on a tenth of a bet, I sure as hell wouldn't be living in the middle of nowhere kentucky right now.

yea, lol 1/10th isnt that much but just for maths sake. its 4.2 to the turn then -.1 for the other street?

so lets say i have random hand that needs 6 to 1 to call from the flop. it would actually be 5.9 to 1 to hit by the river?

You're still a bit off. The reason why flop->turn is slightly different from turn->river is because you've seen one more card. So if you're working with 9/47 on the flop, you will be seeing 9/46 on the turn (assuming the turn card wasn't the right suit). Flop->river is different entirely.
