Default KQs on button - isolation 3-bet gone wrong

If the others had paid any attention they must have thought I was a rock, my VP$IP so far was 12%. I think at least BB and MP had noticed. BB was kind of passive and loose pre-flop and seemed pretty straightforward post, if he called he had decent pair+kicker/draw. MP was tighter and open-raised more. SB was hard to get a read on but he was extremely loose pre-flop.

Paradise Poker 1/2 Hold'em (5 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is Button with Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img].

Flop: (12 SB) 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 2[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP checks, Hero bets, SB calls, BB folds, MP folds.

Figured I could fire one more and see what happened.

Turn: (7 BB) K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks.

River: (7 BB) J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks.

Final Pot: 7 BB

Ok, berate me.

I just call preflop.

Flop and turn were perfect.

Bet the river-- time to use that good position to value bet.

Why not bet the turn when your King appears?

I too would bet the river.

Because my opponent's most likely holding that he raised preflop and called a bet on that flop with is a bad ace.

That changes when my opponent does not bet the river. Now I think he has a small pocket pair or nothing, and my king is the best hand so I bet.

Wrong opponent. PFR folded, SB called 2.5 cold preflop.

Right, I didn't really expect him to fold. If he and one of the others called I figured that I would probably be drawing to some runner-runner hand. But since he is the one most likely to have cold-called with any ace I didn't want to put in more money and he was passive so it isn't certain he would bet the river with an ace even after I checked through the turn.

Seeing the river with hopefully only SB getting 12:1 seemed like a good gamble.

I think betting the turn and river is crucial.

Care to elaborate? To me it looks like I'm either way ahead or way behind but since he is the only one who called the flop I have as good a chance to win as I was going to get.

I'm not saying you are wrong though... I did post the hand after all.

Bet the turn and be done with it.

They could have a medium pocket pair or maybe 89 suited.
Maybe they'll muck Ace rag suited if it's your lucky day.

I would not bet the river if called on the turn as I am not expecting anyone to lay down an Ace, and AKJ on board will make it tough for a medium pair or 89 suited to call.
