new monitor fuzzy

i just got a new monitor and the letter look a little fuzzy on fonts. so I chaged the refresh rate from 60Hz to 75Hz (even though 75 wasn't a setting "it supported". the letters became sharp, however, now the color doesn't seem as clear. things seem more washed out. any ideas how to set this? i have the dell 24" widescreen.
