when are you officially all in?

suppose you are playing say 100-200 limit
you happen to have 100 left on the flop and you bet it.
are you now all-in, or do you only become all-in when theres a new bet/raise you cant cover?
the only reason i ask is that if you become allin during a hand, if you want to buy more chips after the hand (assuming you lost), you have to buy at least the table minimum, if you werent all in, you could buy less than the minimum.(at least thats the rule anyplace ive played)

When you put all the chips in front of you into the pot you are all in. Most rooms allow one short buy in limit games.

You're all in once you have no more chips in front of you. When those last 100 go into the pot, whether there's a raise or not, you're all in. The side pot will be created IF more money goes in, but even if it doesn't you are all in because you're out of chips.

What would make sense to you? Being all in before you put all your chips in the pot? Being all in while you are putting your last chips in the pot? Or being all in after you put all your chips in the pot? I'm really wondering what doesn't make sense to you.

it would make sense to me that you become all in when you are facing a bet and cant cover it

There are no short buy-ins in Atlantic City. Once you go all in, you must buy in for at least the table minimum. At Borgata, the buy-ins for 40-80 and 80-160 are higher than the norm (1000 and 2000 respectively). So if people go all in, they have to come up with the complete buy-in (which I think is a little excessive). I think there should be one short buy-in allowed...people are just paranoid about hit and run I guess.

i heard they raised it just for that particular reason. i think they should raise it for the 20 game as well

This is a misstatement of the rule, which is what leads to your confusion.

The rule is that if you have no more chips (or cash if cash plays) on the table than you must make a full buy-in in order to buy more chips.

You may think that this makes no sense, but short buys make no sense to me.

These aren't that much larger than standard. The normal buy-iin is 5 times that max bet for games lower than 30-60, $500 for 30-60, and 10 times the max bet for games larger than 30-60.
