Default To those thinking about getting an Inspiron 9300 for multitabling ...

Be careful that you don't accidentally purchase one with only 1440x900 resolution. I did that and Dell told me that if I want the 1920x1200 resolution I will have to return the one I bought, pay a 15% restocking fee, and order a new one with the higher resolution.

I just ordered one. I was under the impression that they have a 30 day money back guarantee? I think your mistake was telling them you wanted to exchange it. Just tell them you want to return it based on their 30 day money back guarantee, and then buy the new one.

Ok, thanks, I'll call them up and ask them about that but I'm not very optimistic based on my experience with their reps so far on this issue.

Default I sucked out!

I looked at the Dell website and their return policy to see if there was anything like a general 30-day money back guarantee as jman220 had mentioned, but did't find anything. Perhaps that used to be their policy but they changed it to reduce the rate of frivolous returns. Their return policy now states they may apply a 15% restocking fee if they do not believe they were at fault.

I tried calling them again anyway. I finally was able to get on the phone with a guy who had the authority to waive the restocking fee. He offered me a $175 rebate if I would agree to simply keep the laptop. I told him I couldn't, that I really needed the 1920x1200 and that was what I thought I was ordering at the time. He agreed to waive the fee!

They did that with me too! Now that I actually got one that I'm satisfied with I should probably call in and say I want to return it. If they offer me I'll take it, if not, I'll just say nevermind.

I'm also now selling my 9300 since I replaced it with a desktop -- it's got the UXGA 1920x1200 screen if anyone's interested.

Can you 4-table without overlap on the 9300 w/ 1920x1200 resolution?

My wife wants to replace our current (crappy) desktop and she wants to get a laptop. I had been looking to keep the cost under $1200...but I might go higher if I can 4-table w/o overlap...

Yes. For 4-tabling without overlap you should be aiming for 1600x1200 or higher resolution. 1920x1200 will allow for no-overlap 4-tabling with a little bit of extra room left over.

Sweet. Thanks for the info.

If you don't mind...how much did your Inspiron 9300 cost?

Also, is there a good place to find out what specs are "good enough" for different uses? We basically just want to use the computer for:

1. Internet
2. Word / Excel / PowerPoint -- for personal and business use (nothing very intensive)
3. Poker
4. Quicken
5. iTunes

I want the computer to be good for 3-5 years at least. It does not seem like we need too powerful of a machine for this. Thanks for any info you can provide!

Including taxes, S&H I paid about $2000 for mine but now realize that I didn't try hard enough to find a good deal. I recommend looking around on Ebay and, as I previously mentioned, double-checking to make sure you are getting one with the 1920x1200 resolution. I believe the corresponding acronym is UWXGA whereas WXGA corresponds to the lower res version.

Be careful if you order off of the Dell website because some of their 9300 special deals will only offer the lower resolution as a choice on the customization page without explicitly stating exactly what that resolution is.

I speculate that if you get a 1.7 GHz or better processor, 512+ MB of RAM, 128+ MB of Video memory and 80+ GB of hard disk space then you should be alright for 3-5 years and the purposes you listed. I also think the Inspiron 9300's are upgradeable up to 2 GB of RAM which will go a long way towards maximizing its useful life.

Edit: Other posters on this forum may be able to provide more educated opinions on this specific issue.
