Or some other unpalatable option like Clayton or Cora. Maybe with the intention of letting Pedroia challenge for the job and/or of renting Michael Young for half the season next year.

But either way it is better than flipping Marte and others back down to Tampa for some disgusting combination of Lugo/Huff/Baez.

Lugo is a decent player but, given that the D-Rays were apparently unwilling to flip him straight up for Marte, the rumored packages for Lugo and others would have been ugly. Lugo is also entering his free agent year and, given current market trends, the Sox would likely be in a position of either overpaying him to stay or just getting a one year rental. Marte is a risk, obviously, but the value of getting a low cost impact player for six years is really considerable.
