Re: Nominations for Best \"Rock\" Album of 2005
Because you're leaving out Johnny Cash, the Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly, etc. Indie rock is the closest thing to these guys there is in modern times.
There are indie bands that rock with pretty good guitar like Built to Spill, Sleater-Kinney, Pretty Girls Make Graves, White Stripes, The Von Bondies, Icarus Line, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth, Ted Leo, and the Walkmen. It's just that much of indie rock is really just pop, but not a lot of people like to admit they listen to pop music. |

Doug Martsch only plays a "pretty good" guitar, Jack? JUST JOSHING! But seriously, he's awesome.

Doug Martsch is one of the greatest guitarists of our generation. I just didn't want to build him up too much

I hope this is a joke. This is how you would diagram rock?
CYHSY and New Pornographers are my picks I'm one of those who thinks Sufjan Stevens is overrated and also Kanye is derivative as hell. |

Re: Nominations for Best \"Rock\" Album of 2005
Ok, here's me trying to bridge the gap between the indie parts and the rock parts. It's a Built to Spill song and Doug Martsch IS one of the best guitarist around these days. This might not be the most accessible song, but if you can give it until just after the 4 minute mark, you can hear Doug go off for 2 minutes. This man is absolutely sick. His biggest influence is Neil Young by far, and I'd post Doug's cover of Cortez the Killer which features four guitars, 2 drum sets, and a bass guitar (2? bass guitars? I don't remember) jamming for 20 minutes, but it's f'ing long and I figured I'd try this first.
Built to Spill - I Would Hurt a Fly And yes, Doug does have a high voice. |

I really love the Built to Spill version of Cortez the Killer. That back to back with Car on their live album is bliss.

I really just wanted someone to bridge that gap for me, and I can very much appreciate the guitar. My diagram of rock was very [censored], and this was because I didnt feel like typing 80 paragraphs which would have gotten multiple "tl;dr" responses. Its good to know there's still some guitar around. Although they're not my flavor, los lonely boys are unmatched in pop music for good technical guitar. |
