Is spread trading like poker?

I met someone this weekend that claims he is making a living with spread trading. Now I have no idea what it entails, is it possible?

Are there things similar to poker one can make a living of? Something where you acquire skill, utilize a bankroll with good risk management and earn money on your own at your own time?
