I just tried it... haven't tried in a long time. I got 2:47, but I really struggled to squeeze in the last 5 seconds or so. But, in the past, I used to swim a lot and play hold your breath games.

I personally know a guy that can hold his breath for nearly 5 minutes, which is pretty impressive.

You do realize you are killing many brain cells every time you do this?

How does holding your breath kill brain cells? I mean, am I killing brain cells every time I go swimming and dive to the bottom?

I only got 75 seconds on my first attempt. I know I used to be able to do 90 in a pool, and I'm a lot older now, so I should be able to beat that.

It's easier for me in a pool because the water forces you to hold your breath without you having to use any additional energy.

What's the optimal way to do this at your desk? ATM I'm just sitting upright in a chair and holding my nose closed with my right hand.

I was on the swim team in high school so one season I decided to try synchronized swimming during the off season for conditioning. During practice we used to have to do "under-overs" which means you swim underwater one length of the pool (25yards) then swim freestyle back. Underwater you couldn't come up for air and if you did then you had to redo it, then freestyle back you can breathe as often as you wanted. By midseason we had to do like 20 of them just for warmup. I could do them by the end of the season, but in the beginning I had a very difficult time because when I was underwater I would freak out and couldn't hold my breath very long (I think subconsciously I was afraid I would get too deep and not be able to come up for air in time) I definetly noticed a difference after a couple weeks of doing these, when working out I didn't get as winded and it's proven that blood pressure decreases if you do daily sets of breathing exercises (3 seconds inhale and 6 seconds exhale or something like that)

As for how long I can hold my breath...It's too pitiful to admit, apparently I haven't been doing my under-overs

Take 3 deep breaths before you start, and also the first one will probably not be your longest, second or third should be your peak then you will begin to get tired and out of breath.

I could have never imagined how much work that sport was going to be going into it. Very much strength and flexibility, and yes, you have to smile the entire time during your routine.
