Default PokerStars changing rules on MTT\'s

I felt like some of you may find this information useful and worthwhile so I am sharing it with the general public. To give you some background I recently contacted PokerStars on an integrity issue regarding players setting up "horses" in major tournaments and switching accounts after one of their main accounts busted from the tournament. In this post I will post my email to Stars support, and their response.

[ QUOTE ]
Support,

I was on table 288 of the 215 plhe wcoop event, I busted to a player named missgrinder, her husband TheGrinder was also in the tourney, but on a different table.

Earlier in the tourney, TheGrinder busted, apparently some time after this, TheGrinder took over for his wife and played under the name missgrinder. All of this was admitted while on the table. I urge you take a look at the table chat (and observer chat) and tell me what you think. Does Pokerstars allow someone to account share like that? Seems like you shouldn't be able to set up horses in the event to come play after you have busted from your main account. In the very least it seems very unethical, if not worse than that.

Please let me know how you feel about this, and what will be done.

Regards,
Josh Johnson

P.S. I have also heard rumors about exclusive taking over accounts mid tourney (El Capitano), but I don't think there was any conclusive proof to this statement.

After sending this email, about 36 hours later I received an email from HostJeff head of support.

[ QUOTE ]
Hello Joshua,

PokerStars will shortly be instituting a new rule that states that no
individual may play in a tournament using more than one account. While it
will not be enforced retroactively, we will be sending a warning to The
Grinder and missgrinder, letting them know that what they did is now
against the rules and is not to be done again lest they risk
disqualification.

Thank you for your vigilance and report of this incident, and for playing
on PokerStars.

Best Regards,

Jeff

After hearing the good news I wanted a little clarification so I asked him this:

[ QUOTE ]
Jeff,

One more thing, will this rule be IP enforced (similar to your ban on the
same IP playing in the same SNG), or enforced just if there is evidence
suggesting someone is account switching after one account busts.

Regards,
Josh

[/ QUOTE ]

Jeff sent back this.

[ QUOTE ]
Hello Joshua,

This rule will not be technologically enforced. IP addresses are
notoriously poor identifiers of players, in any case. The IP address of a
dialup modem user changes with every connection, for example.

There really is little we can do to enforce this rule via technology,
other than to tie each player to a single machine and tell them they can't
play from elsewhere -- something we are simply not prepared to do.

We will be spot-checking winners of major events, however.

Best Regards,

Jeff

I applaud PokerStars for changing the rules, and I hope Stars vigorously enforces the new rule even if it is not enforced technologically.

Good.

Although tough to enforce, perhaps it will help.

I hope the uproar on this board had something to do with it.

I hope they make a very public example out of the first person caught.

Woodguy
