I do remember seeing that at the 1998 ME, and that Scotty did end up making the wrong call and losing the hand. I think that it is a tell that the person is strong...remember how pretending not to be interested in a hand is a tell? Obviously walking away says that you're really not interested. So the guy's not worried about losing all his chips.
