Default Medium flush on paired board - Do you 3 bet this river?

Paradise Poker 0.50/1 Hold'em (9 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is SB with T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
3 folds, MP2 calls, 1 fold, CO calls, 1 fold, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: (4 SB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (4 players)
Hero bets, BB folds, MP2 folds, CO calls.

Turn: (3 BB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero checks, CO checks.

River: (3 BB) 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero bets, CO raises, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 7 BB

I know a boat is pretty unlikely, but a better flush is also possible. Do you three bet this against an unknown or just call?

Comments appreciated.

Against an unknown, I would 3 bet. I think you are often ahead of 2 pair or trips here.

Depends on your reads.

Against an unknown it's probably pretty borderline between the two.

It smells more like a flush than trips or a boat, as I think most players would bet this turn with trips or better (remember he was last to act so it's not like he was trying to check-raise the turn).

With no reads I think I'm taking the same line as you. It would really suck to get 4 bet here. But I'm not going to argue with anyone who wants to reraise this river, either.

I'd call. The only way I would 3bet is if I could fold to a cap, and I can't do that. Hands like QJs, KJs, Axs are all perfectly reasonable, and many players will play them just like this. Hell, you'll see players play AJs this passively.

If he's willing to check behind on the turn with trip 3s, or raise 89 on the river he's uberdonkey, and you'll be able to get it from him next time he does something this stupid.

The big mistake is checking the turn. You should protect your hand there.

Calling the river is good. It doesn't look like he would have anything but a higher flush, but it depends on what kind of player you are against.

What are we protecting against? We don't want someone to suck out against our ten high? Remember we're on a draw. And it's heads up. We might consider betting if we think we have any fold equity but we'd hate to be raised. In most cases the villian is almost sure to have a higher equity than us so betting is useless unless we think our opponent will fold. Without reads and out of position I'm checking this turn.

Good lord what hand are we "protecting" here? If you want to bet as a semi-bluff I'm cool with that but Hero's line here isn't atrocious.

Hey, my play is NOT atrocious. Cool!

Anyway I can think of lots of hands I am behind on the turn, so I checked. What am I protecting?
