Default Cold Call Pre-Flop Question...Low Content

Hi All,

I feel I have read conflicting opinions about this issue in the forum, so I am hoping for some clarification...

If we have a read on player (say really high PFR%)...he/she raises in EP, can we lower our cold calling standards?

It just seems I've read different opionions about this.

Thanks,

- Jim

I might not lower my cold calling standards, but I would certainly lower my 3-betting standards.

agreed. if we know something about their standards id rather 3bet and try to isolate.

My understanding is no - you don't lower your cold-calling standards, rather lower your 3-bet standards in an attempt to isolate him.

For example, something like AQo that might be a sketchy cold-call against a normal player is an easy reraise in this situation. I still toss weak offsuit broadways like KT.

The thing I wonder about is a hand like 44. Say Villain raises in EP and it's folded to you in the CO. Calling seems wrong, but raising seems over-aggressive. Then, folding makes me feel weak-tight.

Thanks for the input...

I think with the fours...if it's folded to you and only the blinds are left..I think I would fold.

You have nowhere near the odds to hit your set in that situation, so if you can't bring yourself to 3bet and play it at face value, toss it.

Yes, I realize playing 44 with the mindset that you'll need to hit a set to win in this situation is borderline retarded given that you're seeing a flop for essentially even money.

But is "bringing yourself to 3-bet and play it at face value" a legitimate play?

If the raiser is raising only pretty light, then I fold it. If he's more on the maniacal side, sure, but be prepared to play carefully.

Not really. About the only exception I can think of is KQ. I will usually fold this hand to an EP raise, but against a player I know will raise from EP with KT, I'll call. I'm still not going to 3 bet it, though.

I think this might make an excellent caise for reraising or folding. If a loose aggressive player raises in early position you want to play more loosely but reraise when you come into a hand. This way you can isolate the LAG player.
