JJJ on flop, agressive bettor
I wasn't too proud of this one...
Party Poker 0.50/1 Hold'em (8 handed) converter Preflop: Hero is BB with J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. 2 folds, MP1 calls, 3 folds, SB completes, Hero checks, Great ... a garbage hand in the BB, and they are kind enough to let me see a flop with it. Flop: (3 SB) J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 2[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (3 players) SB checks, Hero bets, MP1 folds, SB calls. Suddenly, my prospects are looking up... The best deception at PP .5/1 is just betting out, so I do so. SB thinks for a couple of seconds and calls. Turn: (2.50 BB) Q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players) SB checks, Hero bets, SB raises, Hero calls. I lead out and am unexpectedly raised. This derails me for a second, I look at my four kicker, and instinctively call. River: (6.50 BB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players) SB checks, Hero bets, SB calls. I think for another second, deeply regret not raising, and bet out. Final Pot: 8.50 BB Main Pot: 8.50 BB, between SB and Hero. > Pot won by Hero (8.50 BB). Results in white below: SB shows Kd Qh (two pair, queens and jacks). Hero shows Jc 4d (three of a kind, jacks). Outcome: Hero wins 8.50 BB. Considering the results, I'm not sure if SB would have called a 3-bet on the turn or not. Did I gain a bet or lose one by wussing out? (edit: removed dumb misread of my own play history wondering about c/r on river) |

Re: JJJ on flop, agressive bettor
I think he's pretty likely to call your three-bet on the turn here. He knows you've got the J, he just can't quite swallow his pride and dump it. Most micro players can't, anyway.
Anyway, he might catch another Q! NT |

Re: JJJ on flop, agressive bettor
I would think you have to three bet the turn here. If he folds, great, you win right away, no waiting. Worst case scenario, he has a better J and you lose, or he has a Q and hits his trips on the river. In either case, it costs you more. But you win if he folds the turn, and you are going to win most hands that he calls to the river.

Re: JJJ on flop, agressive bettor
You said it yourself: the best deception is betting out. Micro limit players never ever believe you have the hand you are representing. If you raise pre-flop, they put you on AK. When then flop comes KXX, they change their minds and decide you have AQ. When I read the turn action in your post, I immediately thought, "The villian caught his Queen." I three-bet this turn all day long.

Re: JJJ on flop, agressive bettor
I guess you do only have the four kicker but it really is a lot more likely that he just has a queen as opposed to the other jack. You have under-represented your hand by playing straightforwardly here, so I would 3-bet this turn.

Re: JJJ on flop, agressive bettor
I play it the same. With a better kicker, I'd 3-bet, because I'll be ahead so often even when he calls or caps.
