Default Trip Report - Casino Cosmopol, Stockholm

I was back in the homeland for the holidays and one night I went to the casino to check things out. Having lived in the states for the past twelve years and not being home much I had never been to this place before and I had heard some bad things about rake and so forth. Still, I decided to give it a go. I was there on Dec 22, the Thursday before Christmas, arriving around 8 PM and staying until 11:30 or so. I'll list currency stuff in Swedish crowns, divide by 8 or so if you want a dollar figure.

First Impressions:
Man, is this place somber or what? Everyone acts like they are at the library or something, the mood is very subdued and everyone is quite quiet. It cost 30 crowns to get in the door and they have something of a dress code (no shorts, no ratty tennis shoes etc.)

Poker:
The poker room is like the rest of the place, subdued and dark. It's housed on a separate floor from the other gaming. When I got there a tournament was winding down which had been going on for most of the day. From what I picked up the buy-in was 1,100 crowns with first place getting about 77,000 crowns. I don't know about the structure or how many people played etc.

For cash games they were spreading 100/200 and 200/400 limit hold-em, pot-limit hold-em with 50/100 and 100/200 blinds, as well as a dealers choice pot-limit game with 100/200 blinds.

I put myself on the list for the smallest limit game, and got a seat within half an hour or so. The 100/200 equates to about $13/$26 which is more than I normally play. Since it was vacation and everything I just wanted to see how the game flowed so I sat down with the minimum 2,000 crown buy-in.

The game was pretty soft and passive, hardly any raises preflop and lots and lots of calling. In the two hours I was there I'd say I played with about fifteen people. Of these about three seemed like competent, good players. Another six or so were decent, with the rest being quite weak and fishy.

After a few hours of playing I was up a little and finally feeling more comfortable with the limits and so forth, but I ended up having to leave to go home in anticipation of a long next day.

Overall it was a fun experience, and I really would suggest this to anyone who happens to find themselves in Stockholm with a night to spare. As far as the rake it wasn't as bad as I had heard about. 5% up to 100 crowns at the table I was at, much better than the 10-15% I had heard rumors about. Also, all the action at the table is done in English, making it even better for folks not familiar with Swedish. That's about it I think. I am kind of curious if the level of play I experienced is pretty typical of this place, so if anyone has more extensive experience playing at Casino Cosmopol I'd love to hear about it.
