Salt, pepper, and relish. Relish is key.

I'm on a diet so I've cut out the addition of mayo.

Oh yeah, if I have some on hand, adding apple bits is good too.

Apples? Eggs? Peppers? Wow, I never heard of or even considered this stuff in tuna salad. The only stuff I recall having, besides mayo, is celery and onions. I just have mine plain, though, mayo only.

Someone told me about making it with mustard once, to cut back on calories. I love mustard, but that sounded real weird and like a bad match, but if something doesn't sound too pukeworthy, I like to give it an honest try at least once. I tried making my tuna salad with mustard instead of mayo and -- it was okay. Not great, not bad ... I was surprised I was so indifferent about it. I thought for sure it wouldn't work. I've actually made it that way a few times since then, but it's pretty rare, because mayo seems ideal and I'm not that crazy scared of putting on fat.

I'm just hoping you don't add ketchup.

For a plain tuna sandwich: miracle whip or mayo, sliced sweet pickle or relish.

How I really like it: one can of tuna and one can of chicken or turky chunks, miracle whip, sliced sweet pickle. The chicken or turkey cuts the acididity of the canned tuna.

Try plain low-fat yogurt instead.
