I had a problem with my home built pc rebooting on me a few months back. After much tinkering and swapping in and out parts, I tracked the problem down to faulty drivers from ATI.

Probably doesn't apply to your particular problem, but easy to check...

I'm no longer a computer expert, but I have always built my own system and systems for my family members/some friends. I would say it's almost certainly a problem in one of 4 things, in order of likelihood by my opinion.

1) GRAPHICS CARD - very likely; overheating, bad drivers, something wrong with your graphics card. (most system crashes with no compatibility/direct hardware errors are a result of your graphics card/display adapter.. check into both of these)
2) CPU - it could be faulty, overclocked, or overheating.
3) MOTHERBOARD - a variety of things could be wrong, update all drivers.
4) RAM - i think this is even less likely, but same principle... if you have defective ram, I wouldn't think your comp. would behave the way it is, but it's possible.

Good luck.

Well, I tried swapping out each stick of RAM, but that didn't help.

As one poster suggested, I went into the BIOS and restored all the defaults. After I did that, and exited the BIOS, I got a screen that says there was some error and it gave me the option of starting in safe mode or starting windows normally. I've tried each option, and what happens is it tries to start windows but then goes in a circle back to the same error screen.

So I'm on my mom's computer right now.

I don't really care about fixing the restarting or noise problems anymore. I'd just like to get some files that I need from the hard drive, then take it out to the alley and beat the shit out of it, like the copy machine in Office Space.

Default bump

Anyone know how to fix this? Or, at least how to recover files on the hard drive?

You might look around in the BIOS and see if you disabled the SATA drive when you reset to defaults. It might be listed as an add in boot device or something like that.
