Default Game to learn after 08? Advanced 08?

Hi,

I've been playing 08 and found it's so much easier making money on the low limit tables compared to Holdem. I just play tight, ABC, and don't chase and it's good.

Two questions:

What game would you recommend to learn after 08? I've heard hi low split stud is similar to 08. Or Omaha hi?

Also, I'm looking for advanced strategy on 08. I've got Zee and Cap's books. I've read Duke's, Badger's, and Pokermafia's articles on 08, but I really feel that there is a dearth of intermediate/advanced articles on 08 out there, at least compared to holdem.

Like for example, if I flop two pair on the flop, and there's two low cards out there, I'm at a quandry on how this should be played. It depends, I'll check if I'm early, and if I'm late I can take a card off.

I'm so sick of all the preflop tight, play A-2, A-3, 08 works better if all your cards work together, blah blah blah. What I'm looking for is a thorough book that gives tons of practical examples. Does such even exist for 08?

Thanks.

One suggestion might be to watcht the 75 game at stars. You may not be able to see the hole cards of the losing hands but I think you'd be surprised at how much you can learn about post flop play from watching games like these.

Okay, this is a good post. It's good because you don't just automatically assume you are an advanced player and have nothing more to learn.

First off, just throw away the notion of learning another game already before you become more advanced at O8. Stick with O8 for now, if you are having questions about playing two pair on a low flop.

You probably need to read Ray's book again and again if you don't think it's advanced enough. It is deceptively simple sounding, as are a lot of the 2+2 books. Many people think that they are playing the way 2+2 authors recommend, but they are fooling themselves.

"Why sure, anyone would check-raise semi-bluff in that situation, it's just common sense, I do it all the time!"

I hear that over and over again (that sort of thing), but be honest with yourself, how many times do you really see some advanced play that you have read about in 2+2 books? And more importantly, how often do you really make these supposedly common sense plays yourself?

The real truth is, some advanced plays that seems so deceptively simply are rarely used. So if you think you've conquered Ray's book, think again, and read it with an open mind, letting the advanced nature of it teach you some new tricks.

Another book, that is mostly geared towards Omaha High, but will give you something to think about, is Bob Ciaffone's book, "Hold'em Omaha Poker." If nothing else, Bob will make you chew on some things you may never have thought about before. It's hopelessly out of date, but the theory is still very applicable to Omaha.

Just about the time I think I know something thoroughly in poker, the real world smacks me in the face and I realize that this game takes a lifetime to master. I don't know anything at all...

Do you want to master the game or make money at the low limits?

It is also pretty easy to make money in loose low limit 7 card stud 8 or better games. Many people play terribly. But I think that is true of many low limit games.

Omaha/8 has a distinct advantage. Since you are often holding or drawing to the nuts, you do not have to worry about the school of fish phenomena (when many fish enter the pot in hold'em, for example, it increases their odds so that their bad calls are not so bad).

IMO, I think limit hold'em and omaha/8 are the only two fixed limit games really worth playing in the long run. these are the only two games spread at the lower limits in the casinos where you can't go broke if you are a good money manager, whereas you can go broke pretty quick in a NL/PL game. there is always more to learn about a game so keep reading articles and getting better at these two games.

I would have to assume that if you were to play Omaha high, then you would be in a PL game. While these games are profitable, there are a lot of hold'em plays that turn into leaks in omaha. There are a lot more stressful decisions (in the beginning) that are required to make successful plays. Putting in stack after stack with draws or full house draws can be gut wrenching.

If you're having success at limit O8, I suggest you try PLO8. Win rates are unbelieveable there.

Good luck!
