Internet going on and off

I have Comcast Digital Cable or something like that and sometimes it will disconnect for a couple of seconds (maybe 10) which is preceeded by a loud beep. Does anyone know what this is? Any help? Any more info you need?

When does this happen/what type of cable modem do you have?

It's totally irratic as to when it happens but it often comes in spurts. The modem is made by 3Com and is gray and a funny shape. It has these three lights, two of which are always on and 1 which flickers.

Have you tried calling comcast? Sounds like a signal strength issue where your router is not staying trained up.
