Default Re: Best place to live in Calif. (for poker)

In 1994/95 I was out in LA for 2 months twice just playing poker mostly 10,20 and 40 LHE games and some forays into bigger games-lost 6 dimes playing $40-80 oops.I stayed at a motel in Manhattan Beach and had a casino rate from HP at a nice hotel near LAX.. forget the name.Back then Hollywood Park and Commerce were the best rooms.I knew HP had gone down hill but didnt they try to clean things up there last year or so?
I ask because I've thought about moving from FL. to LA many times.I've pondered that the following areas were decent for me because they were close to the beach and close to HP/TheBike/Commerce:
South Bay:Manhattan Beach,El Segundo-there are some decent areas here-dont think I want to go as far south as Hermosa or Redondo...this was assuming being near Hollywood Park was a priority.
Other areas I'd focus on a re Santa Monica,Westchester,MarinaDelRey.How about Brentwood.I also like Pasadena but it's not close to the beach..
Is HP really such a craphole these days?IF so I would lean toward more northern locals .How about North Hollywood, Los Feliz,Silver Lake areas ?
Safety and proximity to good music/food is more important than worrying about an extra few hundred a month in rent.
Right now I pay $850 a month for a massive townhouse 1800sq.ft..but the demographic here in Vero Beach is just too damn old.I would'nt want to pay more than $1200-$1500 for at minimum a 1200 sq.ft/2br/2bath apt./townhouse.I need space I got a lot of crap.
Any feeback welcome

after touring some of the homes in Compton, you should at least take a look at what Oakland has to offer...

seriously, what about Vegas prices? those have to be better than Cali. I live in Norcal and its damn expensive.

Simple, buy an RV and park it at Commerce. Problem solved!

ROTFLMAO! There is some guy from Montana that has had his RV parked on the street in front of Oceans 11 for like the last month.

I have a house in the Dallas area and a house here in Temecula area. The Dallas house is larger by 600 Sq Feet, 1/3 larger lot (it's a small lot on Cul De Sac for the neighborhood), oh and is about 1/2 the price....

Temecula isn't that bad, but your are 1-2 hours from everything. It took me 3 1/2 hours to get from Santa Monica airport (left at 3:30PM) back to Temecula (about 100 miles) this afternoon. Pasadena wouldn't be that bad, friend has a small (400 Sq Foot) 1 BR, 1BA that he only pays $1000 month....beware SBC DSL crashes every few hours.

Sacramento. Definitely not urban. Rent is cheaper than most other California areas. Traffic is not bad. Nice being an hour from Tahoe. Within 15 miles are two card rooms, and 4 other are within 45 minutes. [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

What are their names? I just moved here a couple months ago for a job.

It isn't too urban. I live in midtown, the most urban neighborhood.. but compared to major cities like sf, la, boston, ny it's nothing.

However, sacramento is sorta boring.
