About a block from Harrah's on Tchapatoulis (?sp) is Mother's, a great place for poboys.

I just got back from there yesterday. Personally, I love Harrah's. The poker room has No Limit and the limit games are fun. My buddy and I ate at the Steakhouse in Harrah's and actually it was very good. The Palace is also very good but the service there seems to suck sometimes. Redfish Grill is pretty good too. There is even a Lobster place in the Riverwalk shops that is pretty good.

I don't think you can go wrong with food in that city. The hotels are expensive, and so far I've only stayed in one that I'd really recommend- the Omni Royal Crescent- but I usually try to find the cheaper places so maybe this is why I've had little luck in that area.

Harrah's is a great place to play, and they usually have 3-6 hold 'em and omaha, also, they like to spread a few half and half tables, and that can be very fun. If you have the choice, which I doubt you will, try to sit at one of the tables under the lower ceiling, it's much quieter. The higher stakes games here are also very good.

Additionally, the staff at Harrah's is very freindly, and the dealer's are usually quite good.

A few things worth mentioning though, last time I was there, the poker room was still a smoking area, exept for the seats on either side of the dealer. Don't know if that would affect your choice. Also, if you wind up playing late, and you have a hotel near the casino, consider asking a casino guard to walk you there, just a suggestion, NO can get rough late at night.

As a final note, if you are in New Orleans, and a man offers to bet you that he can guess where you got your shoes, just say "I got them on my feet" and keep walking. That's not a joke it will happen to you at least five times on your trip.

Cafe Maspero is adequate but probably only belongs in a 'good po-boys or fried oysters for cheap' section. hardly the pinnacle of new orleans cuisine.

nobody mentioned the famous tipitina's?? haven't been there myself but i intend on tracking it down someday...has quite the reputation.

also - i have no issues with the harrah's area at night. but maybe the security guy thing isn't a bad idea if you make a big score, it's late at night, and you are an elder or perhaps look super-touristy.
i've always been comfortable in that area however and i have been told that is not like it used to be when it was more dangerous.

when i last played at harrah's (december) there was plenty of HE being spread. i didn't ask about the omaha....but i think harrah's is accomodating their clientelle.
all the talk was about their upcoming WPT event. the table behind me was holding a satellite.
the 6/12 table to the side of me had hit a bad-beat jackpot....they were playing for about a half-hour or so after they hit the jackpot waiting for everyone to get paid. once they got their money almost everyone at the table was out of there.

i've heard of some issues with the dealers and the room-manager there but my experience was extremely positive and everyone was pretty friendly.

Just got back from NO today. Only played for one day. But they allways seem to have a 3 6 game going and a 1 5 stud game at least. One strange thing i noticed is you don't have to wait for the blinds when you sit down. Also They take money out of the pot for tip. The tips must get split between all the dealers though because if you tip the dealer after you win he puts it in his own personal stash but the dollar he takes out goes in a box that sits at the table all day long.

The 3 6 hold em game was pretty loose though and seemed easily beatable if i didn't get really drunk and start playing like a jackass.

I've lived in NO for a couple years now. Most of my favorite restaurants are Uptown. Most of them the streetcar can get you close enough, others you might have to grab a cab. Just short list would be: Brigtsens, Martinique Bistro, Gautreau's, Jacques-Imo, Delmonico (the only Emeril's restaurant I like), Vincent's (best italian in town), Dante's Kitchen...I could go on for hours.

If youre looking to stay downtown, there are plenty of great choices over there as well. The best place on Bourbon is definitely Galatoire's, but it's pretty pricey and requires a coat at night and on sundays. I's also try Mr. B's, Arnauds, Antoines, Smith and Wollensky. You MUST go to Brennens for breakfast one morning. Stay away from Commander's Palace. It's famous and expensive, but really not that good.

The extra $1 drop is for the bad beat jackpot. It takes having A's full of T's beat, with all hole cards playing to qualify.

Loser gets half; winner gets 25%, and the rest of the table splits the balance.

OHHHHH its for the progresive well that sucks. I guess people are really just that cheap there. Lots of people weren't tipping.

yes...it's for the bad-beat.

i dont know about vegas....but all poker-rooms that i've been to in mississippi and louisana allow you to join the tables AFTER the blinds pass at the low-limits (3-6....maybe 6-12, not sure). in other words, it isn't just a harrah's thing.

Default Thanks for the shoe scam advice.

Thanks for the shoe scam advice....I was in New Orleans over the weekend and they tried the shoe scam. My friends were anazed that I knew what was going on.
I asked one of the scammers if he actually made money at this scam, he smiled said "for thirteen years" and walked away.
