I used to have to endure those Montana winters with just a wood stove for heat in a creaky 1910's house.

I'll tell ya what...if ANYTHING drove me out of Montana, it was that - when I move back someday the old place is going down and getting rebuilt a bit better...

with heat.

i like the cold. it is real pretty outside with the sun and all.

but we had ice fog this morning. it was very thick. so when that happens i go down to the river in the morning. you see the fish jump and with the ice fog so cold they get frozen immediately in it. so i just take a sack and pick them right from the fog about waist high.

wow Ray, I have never heard of that before, sounds like a trip.

Do you need a license to "catch" those fish?

So it was supposed to be a high of five degrees today. My wife felt bad about leaving the dog outside so she locked him up in the house, but now she's worrying about him tearing it up. Would an 11 month old golden retriever be OK left outside in five degree weather for six hours? He would have access to a (ghetto) dog house.

I'm voting No. That's pretty damn cold.

Yeah. Even furry animals die of exposure. Five degrees is very cold. Think of yourself barefoot with a thin coat out there for that long. And as a kid. Best case scenario is you'd be absolutely miserable. Worst case scenarios let's not talk about.

In the mountains of VA and it is cold, but then I don't have heat. But it's still cold, my feet are tingling so much they are burning. I like Va and all but it is hot as hell here in the summer, over 100 for all of august and most of july, but then cold as nuts in the winter, but at least nuthin like -20, we'll get -5 in the morning for some of Feb maybe.

The one thing I got out of this thread is that most people these days (including myself) are pussies when it comes to cold weather. A few weeks ago I was talking to a guy who used to drive cattle up in Montana. This guy worked outside, year around and we got into talking about the weather. The cowboy said that it usually isn't too bad as long as it doesn't get colder than ten or fifteen below. But, when it drops down to sixty below it's pretty miserable to be in the saddle all day.

Its 28F currently at night (Austin, Tx), and might go into the low 20's. I just used some warn water and a dvd case to get the ice off my windshield. The ice has pretty much covered the city and closed everything down. I'll say it again, I live in Texas just to avoid this type of crappy weather. I don't see how you people go through 4+ months of this.
