"Disc_Golf"

best SN i've seen in a long time. I used to play a shite-ton, but since moving away from the course, i only throw about twice a month or less . where do oyou play? what's your bag? i throw mostly Innova discs, lotsa Rocs and firebirds, aviar putter, though i do like the wham-o '86 softies, which a player named Glen Whitlock introduced me to. DG>ball golf.

BTW, stud is far from dead, IMO, i think more and more players will be gravitating to stud as they burn out on hold 'em (like i did).

Winning players burn out from holdem and get into stud. Losing players can't afford to play enough holdem to burn out

I have heard some say that Stud is dead and I didn't think that was true.

[/ QUOTE ]

Stud used to be the most commonly played form of poker...i think even SS1 says as much. Obviously HE has taken that position in poker, so in that sense stud is "dead" -- more specifically, the supremacy of stud is dead.

[ QUOTE ]
Should a good Holdem player add Omaha to his quiver before trying stud or vice versa?

[/ QUOTE ] That's like asking should someone who likes eating at McDonald's start eating at Burger King more. I dunno. I suppose it depends on your goals in playing poker. If you're in it for fun, and HE has gotten boring, then by all means try something else. If you're in it to make money, and you're doing that in HE, then why change games?

I think stud adds some tools to your hold em game that simply adding Omaha can't. A huge part of being a successful stud player is figuring out exactly what other players at the table are doing, trying to range their hole cards, and discounting your percentages based on those reads. I don't think enough "good" hold em players try to think about these things in much depth or consider redrawing, etc, all things stud teach you to do. Adding all games to your bag is very important IMO, but the complexity of stud helps you think about other games in a lot of unique ways. Take this with a grain of salt though, it comes from someone who started off in stud and then went to hold em.

not true. I was a losing hold 'em player when i discovered stud. I played more than enough to get burnt out. Though the 'it's winning burn-outs that drift over to stud' theroy could account for the apperantly improving quality of online stud play. just a year ago, i remember ALL the 1/2 party tables having like $20-$25 avg pots. now it's rare to see any that high. gonna make a post bout that.

learning stud, studying, and becoming a winning stud player actually helped my hold 'em game a lot, esp when it comes to reading hands. i now am a long term winner at both, though not lately.

Stud will be revived when the equivalent of Small Stakes Hold'em is written, not before.

[/ QUOTE ]
I think it was written in 1996: "7 Card Stud: How to Win at the Medium and Lower Limits" by Roy West.

Stud seems to be growing at the Commerce Casino. The last time I was there, they had two $20-$40 tables and one $15-$30 going, where before it was tough to find one $15-30 table.

In Vegas, at the same limits it appeared dead. The Bellagio had one $20-$40 table that only went during the day, and the Mirage $15-$30 didn't go at all.

It's not the same.

Stud needs more fish and more sharks.

WPT helped the fish find Hold'em, 2+2 brought the Sharks.

Stud, even if 2+2 did publish the equivalent of SSHE for Stud would attract the Sharks, but there are only so many fish out there, and TV isn't going to help Stud like it did to Hold'em.

Furthermore, the only reason why Omaha is gaining in popularity is because the fish think it's so much like Hold'em, just a little more complex, wheras Stud is a completely different beast.

Just the way I see it, could be wrong, but I doubt it.

I play DG a lot. I have been into it for a little over 4 years and love it. Play a little less over the last year (since i got serious about poker). I throw mainly Discraft (trying to get sponsored) but my nickname on the course is Kid Roc because I throw so many Rocs. I play in the Dallas-ft.worth area but travel to some big tournaments a couple times a year around the country.

What if the WPT added other games as the feature event? PPM is limit HE, but what about a Stud event and a PLO tournament that makes it to the TV? I think that these games would grow much more if the fish could learn the basics by watching it on TV like they did with NLHE.

Have you ever watched stud on TV? They should it during the last WSOP it was like watching paint dry. Even my friends who love the WSOP hated that episode, there are too many nuances to the game for the whole 'it takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master' crowd.
