So I was looking at Gammon Empire's commission schedule and the commission seems huge. 4.9% for small stakes in a game played by 2 people seems like a lot to me. Is this standard and is the game beatable with such a comission structure?

Yep, this is standard, and I also agree that the comission is huge for a game played by two people.
There are no figures, but it would be interesting to know how many % of the players who beat it.

GammonEmpire has an unusually high rake.

I was beating the rake soundly, though I haven't been playing there recently. The key is to play well against people who play horribly. (I also broke some half-decent players so they would stop playing my fish.)

It looks like they also increase the commission if you're playing players that are far worse than you.
