Default Chip Leader - Mandatory Call?

Note the Dead SB in this hand.

Final Pot: t2916

Results in white below:
CO has Ad 5d (high card, ace).
BB has 4h 6c (high card, king).
Outcome: CO wins t2916.

The BB in this hand was upset that I did not call here. I know the BB to be a very good player and a 2+2'er. He said that it was "my duty" to call.

I feel that as the chip leader, I am not worried about busting someone to move up a place. I instead use this short stack for leverage. My raises are not called because everyone is waiting for the short stack to bust out. Once the short stack busts out, I may face a little more resistance to my raises.

So what do you think?

I don't think this is a mandatory call, especially with 64o.

If the all-in were smaller, then perhaps you could, but as it stands, you are being asked to call 2:1 odds with a hand that is probably a 3:1 or greater dog and the BB still to act behind you.

The BB has the odds to call since he is getting better than 3:1, even if you ignore the 'duty' aspect.

Calling would be a really bad play. You are on the button, so you have no chips already invested. As the big stack, you don't want to knock out tiny stacks. If you called, one of the blinds could raise. You would just be wasting chips calling with 64o.

The fact that he hero didnīt invest any money so far is of no importance.

Completely wrong. If you were in the BB with 64o and had posted 1000 blind, calling a 2100 push would be automatic. You would be getting 3.5-1 odds.

Money in the pot is already lost money. Donīt worry about the money you already invested. Just worry about the potsize and the money you have to bring.

Your only obligation as the chip leader is to maintain your stack. You aren't required to call every short stack going all-in.

It would make a difference if he was in the BB...as said before he would be getting greater odds because he would have to call less into the same pot.

Auto fold here. I'm not letting this guy get more ammo against my 64o.

Thanks for the replies. I was pretty sure my actions were correct, but the BB tried to make it sound like it was common knowledge. I saw no reason to triple up the short stack.

What do you think about trying to keep the short stacks around? In this particular tourney, there was a $100 difference in price money between 6th ($500) and 7th ($400). I believe a short stack hanging on is a huge advantage for the chip leader, especially when his lead is nearly 2 to 1 on the next largest stack. Most players are willing to wait for the short stack to bust out before gambling with a medium strong hand.

Our story ends with the short stack, the BB, and myself in the final 3. The short stack eventually busts the BB and goes on to finish 2nd.
