Day "1" could be any of three different days.

Jurollo COULD try and pitch to Harrah's to let him use his Seat next year .... good publicity angle.

Maybe the site you won it from will step up and GIVE you the $10,000.

Aside from whether the site would allow this, its really a personal issue. If you're the type to put work before everyting then my guess is next year you'll be in the identical situation. Work will be their your entire life. Don't make it your life. Go for it while the irons hot!

This is advice from someone who went from college to med school to internship to residency all without a break. I've been nothing but academically and fiscally responsible from day one, volunteering during the summer, working, etc etc.

Play in the WSOP. Seriously. There will be other jobs if need be. Your future will not be decided by whether or not you take one particular summer job or not. What you might consider doing is talking to the people at the job and say, "look, I really want this week off. I'm willing to bust my ass for the rest of the time and be the best employee you've ever had, but I need that week off". They might be amenable to that.

Bottom line, you should take these once-in-a lifetime opportunities as they come, even though this isn't truly that. You'll regret it later if you don't, and that sucks.

Don't mention the week off during the interview and whatever you do don't wait until you show up to tell them. The last thing you want to do is anything that is not 100% up front and honest; nothing gets a career started like getting terminated for lying.

[/ QUOTE ]

Agreed. Don't bring up the WSOP during the interview, but definitely be 100% honest about why you want the time off before your start date. Mention the free seat. Mention the fact that it happened in February. Mention the fact that you are passionate about this.

If you ace the interview, get the job, and get the time off but lie about why you need it and they find out later, you can kiss any resume-building advantages goodbye.

Best of luck in the interview and the Main Event.

haha, that'd be sweet if he said he had to go to a wedding and then a few months later the guy he works for happens to see him on TV getting beat by phil helmuth.

you could always hope that he doesn't realize it's not live...

$10,000 - Seat won
$ 2,600 - Side game money you win during the rest of the week, after busting out in 45 minutes
$ 6,000 - Money earned doing menial landscape work for 10 weeks (400 hrs * $15/hr)
$18,600 - +EV

$20,000 - Government job
$-6,000 - Government's cut (taxes)
$14,000 - +EV

Looks like the WSOP is the clear winner

You do not need a week off.
If you survive three days you will likely cash in and job will be less relevant.
You can take afford to take three days off.

You have to pay taxes in either case. If it was just money for this year, the WSOP is a clear choice. If the job is helpfull career wise it is a lot more difficult. For most summer jobs taking a week off isn't major. I would just say you have a preplanned vacation and go from there.
