also, did you let the bleach set in for a bit before scrubbing? i had the same problem.

Our local paper's fixit column just had a blurb that liquid toilet cleaner works excellent on bathtubs. If the scum is Lyme or mineral then lime away and CLR are decent choices. But soap and shampoo scum mixed with dirt - use toilet bowl cleaner.

NO SANDPAPER- it will make it worse, long term, by creating inconsistancies in the enamal that will trap bacteria and other junk.

first, try bleach- fill the tub and dump a gallon of bleach in, let it sit an hour and then empty and scrub it with a stiff brush. you may want to use 'mildex', a spray on anti mildew cleaner that seems to work well.

I have also had good results with scrubbing bubbles.

oh yeah... very fine (#0000) steel wool will work, too, and won't fk up the enamal.

there are also some good enzyme based cleaners out there these days that are effective and environmentally freindly.

just get any "mildew" strenght bathroom cleaner. comes off with one wipe. use gloves, they contain sodium hydroclorite.

BTW, how much is a maid? Do they do a good VV clean job of cleaning? I have a 2 room studio, but its an old building and gets dusty fast, and I hate cleaning. Do they do laundry too?

scrubbing bubbles, leave it soak for 20 minutes

Use a lot, and don't spare the water. Work it into a paste and spread the paste around. Let the paste sit for a couple of hours. Scrub with lots of water.

Voila.
