"I found ones that wanted to buy a share of my action. I'd play and they'd pay, help me put the money up." Backers put in $35,000; Raymer had $15,00 invested. So, though he just won $5 million, he'll be lucky to see $1 million, he said. He'll see 35 percent off the top, and he'll split the rest - 65 percent with his backers. $2.6 for him; $2.4 for his backers.

I thought he got in on a $150 pokerstars satellite?

I recall him posting around here asking to buy a seat - is that what happened?

He was backed before he won the sat. The backing agreement lasted for the whole year. The bankroll at the end of the year would be slipt up and payed back.

In Andy Glazer's article Greg says that he invested $2,600 in satellites before winning his seat.

And I suspect Greg would say that without his backers he wouldn't have been able to play the number and type of tournaments over the past couple years that gave him the experience he needed to win the WSOP.

It's not quite as simple as pulling $150 outta his pocket and saying "Backers? I don't need no stinkin' Backers!"
