Awesome! Ideally, this is how it should be.

This is the way it should be.

Taxpayers should not be forced to pay for the problems of people in Sri Lanka. Private charity should be used.

Im glad that alot of people are trying to help.

Granted, I don't have too much money but I did donate some to Amazon.com's pool. I believe it's currently over $10m.

$50.00 to amazon by me ....

Was gonna buy Harrington's book but then had a rush of liberal guilt. Hopefully this will subside soon....

BTW these nimrod libertarians who propose no aid dont really understand how interdependant the worlds economies have become. Americans arent really gonna benefit from a collapsed south Asian market in the long run.

If more people gave to private charities - you might have a case. But as Americans we don't donate much, and in a moral sense these people need the money.

When the needed medicines and supplies, etc. arrive, how much difference does it make to the suffering that the giving is a 'tax write off’?

If the marginal corporate tax rate is 50%, half of what a company donates would have otherwise been paid in taxes. The other half would have been profit. It's still $50 out of the corporate purse for every $100 they donate.

Corporations make donations for a lot of reasons, ranging from true concern by the officers and stockholders to cheap public relations and advertising. Sometimes corporations make donations to get on the nightly news. Sometimes the people in charge do it because they think it's the right thing. Whatever their motivation, it still costs them real money.
