All in before the flop. Didn't need to be.

Party $30 +3 afternoon NL Hold 'Em. Close to the first break, half of a 600 player field is out, I have 4x original chips and am in the top 10.

6 players, one of whom covers me (the remainder are mostly at approximately 1/4 my stack), limp to me. I look down to find AA. Figuring that with this crowd I am going to at least one caller maybe more, I push all in.

Covering stack, type-groans, oh I am going to have to call. All others fold.

He shows QQ, the flop has a Q and neither turn nor river is miracle.

Seems like I have been busting out a lot lately with the edge, but still busting out.

Was I wrong to try and get an opponent all in here and risk my whole tournament, even on AA?

I ask because I seem to have a long history of busting out of these mega-player contests with the best hand. But busting out nevertheless. I might have saved around 1x original starting chips with only an overpair to the flop if I had gone slower. But then again, maybe not.

You can't win every tournament. But you'll win more than your share if you keep getting in with the best of it like this. You have to get outdrawn occassionally, and if it's happening a lot you could be on a bad run.

If you think you can get someone to call your all-in while you hold AA, do it every time.

I realize that I got all in with a huge edge. And maybe I didn't give enough information. I mean even going all in with AA you figure to lose 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 hands, at least. And since the all-in only has to lose once to put you out of action, but (if no other plan is used) must work at least 11 times to win a 600 player tournament, My question is, is it possible to overuse it? Is there an alternate strategy that I can use/should be using?

If villian was first to act and went all-in, would you have folded AA...I would hope not! But if your answer is yes, then you should've raised and folded to any resistance out of fear.

I posted the question, because I wanted to explore the possibility of doing something like raising around 1/2 of the size of the smaller (1/4 of mine) stacks to probe.

But in response to the other poster who asked, if Big Stack had pushed, would I have called, I think yes, so that is my answer.

I still wonder if I am too anxious to get all in because of too much experience at 1 table sit 'n go's. AA may not be a good example, but in general my pre-flop reads are pretty good and I am getting in with the best, and out of the way otherwise. I think I am just getting in too much (or getting unlucky for a while here, or having too highly inflated expectations).
