I've had two different people say this to me in the past couple months. If I see someone with a PSU hat/sweatshirt/tshirt on, or any rival school, I'll usually make mention of it.

"All right, a Penn State fan. I like you already!"

awkward silence.

"Actually, it's my friend's."

Honestly, is it that common to wear other people's clothing, especially hats? I have never worn a friend's hat. I can't think of any reason to go out to the supermarket wearing HIS hat. I'll buy my own hat thank you.

Or I'll go hatless. Whatever, I'm not wearing his hat.

Well, there's your problem. They could also mean that their friend got it for them, presumably because he/she goes to the school, rather than it actually being their friend's hat.
