Default Auto Insurance: What If...

You are not on your parents auto policy, but you fly out to their house and spend the week there and drive their cars for errands and stuff. You get into an accident. Are you covered?

Do you have your own insurance? Really this all depends on the policies involved, but almost never is theirs going to cover this. Yours may though if you have it for another vehnicle. If you do, it is trivially easy and inexpensive to get covered on their vehicles while you stay there.

In New York, you get a policy on the car, not the driver. Unless they have something weird excluding you (say an under-21 clause designed to cut rates) and you're under 21, then the car has insurance no matter who is driving it.

In any event, this is a 3 minute phone call to your parents insurance agent, just ask them.
