Default before i buy this

My school has the following for 1765.00

Thinkpad X40 w/ultrabase Combo Drive
ultrabase has CDr/w&DVD-Rom
12.1" XGA, Pm 758 (1.5 GHz)
512 MB RAM (1 DIMMS)
40 GB HD
Ethernet, 802.11 b/g Wireless Card
internal 56k Modem
Windows XP Professional, SP2
No floppy drive
3 year on site limit warranty with Protection Plus
Wt. 2.6 lbs. w/o base

Seemed like a good deal until i realized this was the X40 and not the X41, which is the new one. I read a post on here that said buying the newest stuff isn't often economically effective so i figured this would be ok. This is not really for poker so the 12.1", 1024x768 screen isn't the end of the world. Im looking for a mobile laptop i can take with me as im all over the place during the day and i heard IBM was the way to go.

Any advice is appreciated.

I've noticed the IBM laptops are normally overpriced...the catch is they're built like tanks. Very good machines, but highly overpriced considering you can find a computer similar to it for maybe half the price.

I personally would find a cheap Dell (possibly refurbished) or Toshiba laptop.

Then again, if you're just going to use it for poker, maybe find the cheapest laptop you can find and be happy with it for a year or two (or more)...

Me, I like to keep my stuff till it breaks, so I bought a more expensive laptop. However in retrospect I kind of wish I had paid less.
