Default New iPods

I was thinking about asking for an iPod for Christmas, but I just wanted to get one question answered first. I am assuming that you can play any videos / movies on them, even if you don't download them from iTunes, just like you can with music. Anyone able to confirm this for me?

Yeah. Music plays normally with just iTunes (you don't have to download them through there, the program will load any mp3 you want on it), videos need you to convert it with a special program that you can download for free. I use PSP Video 9 (?) I think.

Alright cool, and is the picture quality decent (does the screen seem big enough)?

My friend recently showed a hack (have to do it on a linux box) where you can play the game Doom on the ipod. It works for a nano or video.

Which doom? Doom 1 or 2 i assume, right? That's pretty neat, but the controls must be awkward, how do they work?
