Other than fold preflop, what advice can you give me? This dude was the loosest player at the table, I had check-raised second pair and got him to fold his raise earlier. This was out of the blue for me.

I would say more "silly" than anything else. This is a mediocre example of why you don't go to war with A8s. A better one would have been where Villain simply had you out kicked.
