Default Skills Needed for Poker

I found the list below on a web site and made a copy of it a very LONG time ago..

Q:P10 What skills are important for Texas Hold'em?
(Hold 'em) Poker Skills in Order of Importance
Disclaimer: I'm a poker novice, not an expert.
0. Table selection
1. Hand selection
2. Reading opponents' hands
3. Opponent assessment
4. Heads up play, bluffing, and semi-bluffing
5. Seat selection
6. Check-raising
7. Getting tells
8. Pot odds calculations

I now look at this list and not only totally disagree, I think there are many skills missing. If you care to take part, I would like you to post a list of the Ten (Poker Skills/Strat) you think are most important to your game. Please make your list in order, 1 being the most important.

* It would be also helpful if you added as a foot note whether most of your play is online or live.

9. The ability to run a search at twoplustwo so that you don't post the same question that gets posted just about every 3 months?

This is unnecessary. Esspescially form someone who's only been on the boards for 2 months. Yes this is a standard question and in my opinion this is secondary to strategy disscussion. But there is no reason to be an ass to someone who obviously didn't know this question was standard. We were all newbies at one time.

To the original poster. A great book on necessary skills and motives for a winning poker player is Schoonmakers "psychology of poker"

In My Opinion
1 hand selection
2 selective agression
3 seat selection
4 understanding opponents (reading and putting them on hand ranges)
5 HU ability based heavily on #4
6 desire to learn and study
7 Table selection
8 Emotional Management
9 Bankroll management skills
10 mathmatical skill

I think you may have missed an obvious #1 choice. In my opinion "Patience" is the key ingredient to a winning poker player(especially an online player). If you have all the other qualities in line but no patience...your doomed.

Yes, patience and discipline are both huge factors as well. I just don't consider that a skill as much as a trait. It can be increased and focused like a skill, but I think it is partly who you are.

Been on the boards a lot longer than 2 months. Just registered two months ago. And I don't feel the need to post EVERY time a thought pops in my head.

That said, I was just screwing around.

On another note, how do you regulate seat selection online ahead of time? Any thoughts?

having a list of player I track helps. I search them and go to tables their at and see if they have an open seat one or two next to them. I also will open up 4 tables and watch them for a while. before I pick the one that has the most prime open seat.
Sometimes this takes a while but having a good seat will make up for lost time in bets. Plus it forces me to read the tables constantly to see how the dynamic changes.
