We had a debate yesterday as to who is responsible for doing the chip countdown. When a player asks for another player's EXACT chip count (as opposed to an observational rough guess) who's responsible for counting down the chips - is it the player that was asked or is the dealer's?

Once the chips are in the pot, it's the dealer's responsibility to count it down.

In a situation where the player doesn't have chips in the pot, it's up to the player, but the player is required to give an honest answer.

As far as tournament play, I've heard several people say (to avoid giving off tells) to "let the dealer count down your chips" if another player asks for an exact count.

Do dealers do this as a courtesy? to keep the game moving? or is a tournament a different situation?

Funny you say this cause that's exactly what sparked the debate. As a dealer, I have always counted down a players chips when someone asks for an EXACT count. However, last night I was a player and another player asked for my chip count. I gave him the "rough count" but he wanted the exact amount so I just looked at the dealer. He then looked back at me and said you need to count it down. Not wanting to give off any tells, I told the dealer that's his responsibility, which of course started the debate.

Neither...It's the responsibility of the player who asks to make sure he/she get's an accurate count. If the asking player is not satisfied with the chip count given by the villian, he should ask the dealer to verify.

For instance, if player A asks player B for the chip count, and player B says "$2000"....And then it turns out to be $2200, player A needs to pay the full $2200.
