Obviously, no.

Turn it around. There is probably something you do that you shouldn't. Smoke? Drink? Drive over the speed limit? Have unprotected sex? Waste time on an Internet poker forum? How would you like it if some self-appointed scold showed up to tell you not to do whatever it is that you want to do?

[/ QUOTE ]

That pretty much sums it up.

Online? No way, you don't know anything about this guy.

Live? I suppose I could see it. I wouldn't feel comfortable saying anything myself, but if you know something about the guy you can maybe figure out if he's losing money he shouldn't be.

I play a fairly low limit live game 1-2 NL. Sure guys can blow off a few hundred and if they do that week after week it'll add up. But generally my supposition is that its small enough that these guys can probably afford it.

This week one guy commented before the game that he'd been running pretty bad (he's not a good player) and that it was hitting him in "the 'ole vacation money". What does that mean? Is it code for the rent money, does it really mean vacation money? Is this money he can afford to lose? How the hell do I know? At least he didn't seem particularly stressed over it.

Now if one of the regulars suddenly went on major steam and started doing things like challenging guys to go all in blind for all their stacks or to cut cards for the stack, and he'd blown off 2 or 3 buy ins in as many minutes and he was trying to goad somebody into doing it with him again, I might say something like, whoa guys, let's just play some poker. But that's probably about the extent of it.

Unless you're talking about the nano and micro limits it's my experience that the lower the stakes the less they can afford to lose. As you get higher you deal with more people who are successful in life/career but just don't play poker well. At the lower stakes it's usually just some idiot, the image of the fun gambler who gambles only what he can afford to lose for entertainment purposes only is not very common.

Some of you replying in this thread should be ashamed. Have a conscience. I'm not saying you have to be a saint at the table and come to the rescue of everyone losing money. Show you're at least a decent human being when the situation calls for it though. I.E. caution an obvious degenerate gambler who just can't seem to stop dropping money they can't afford to lose on a table.

Do you play poker to win moral battles or make money?

I used to live, and the stakes I was playing it was obvious these guys couldn't afford to lose 1500 in a session. I mean you can only say so much before you come across as GA counsellor......

Who the hell are you to say that this ATM is an "obvious degenerate gambler"? In order to add more money to a game the player already has to have that cash available in his online casino account so this is money that he's already committed to gambling with. Even if he takes a few extra minutes to reload from Neteller, etc, you have no way to know that's what he's doing so you should just STFU and thank the lucky stars you have someone like that at your table.
