bet missed flush?
Is checking the river after I missed the flush the right move? My read on the guy to this point was loose/aggressive, though I reconsidered after this hand.

Yes, maybe. Looks like Villian is on a draw too. You have showed some strength betting both flop and turn, so yes, mayeb something like a "value bet" about 3/4 pot. A big bet maybe will alert him that you are trying to steal after a missed flush or straight (if he have a weak Q or a J).
